Origami in Concrete: Estudio Felipe Escudero Completes Casa TA
In the design of Casa TA, Ecuadorian firm Estudio Felipe Escudero challenges traditional residential forms by centering the entire architectural narrative around a singular structural element: the roof. Rather than utilizing a conventional flat slab or simple plane, the studio crafted a continuous, fluid ribbon of white concrete that folds, narrows, and overlaps itself with a precision reminiscent of origami. This sharp-edged tectonic gesture defines the home’s identity, balancing visual mass with an unexpected sense of levitation.
Spanning 800 square meters, the residence uses its generous structural overhangs as functional instruments to control light, privacy, and wind exposure. By juxtaposing the heavy, permanent nature of cast concrete with floor-to-ceiling glass facades, the design achieves a dual state of mass and lightness. The interior volumes transition smoothly between private sanctuaries and open communal spaces, all unified under the continuous, undulating ceiling plane created by the folding roof structure.
