When it comes time to picking between the best bedroom paint colors, the rainbow of choices can be daunting. Light or dark? Warm or cold? Timeless or trendy? Choosing the right paint color is not always easy. Every room has different requirements and different light conditions, and of course your personal preferences play a role too (and maybe even a partner’s, if you choose to sleep in the same bedroom). While it requires some effort to find the right color, it’s certainly worth the time.

To help you select the perfect shade, we asked seven interior designers which hues they think are the best bedroom paint colors. However, as Ester Bruzkus of Ester Bruzkus Architekten notes “there is no easy answer to the question of what is the best wall color for a bedroom, because we always design for each space, its occupants, and the environment.” So consider this list more of a jumping off point rather than hard and fast rules. Below, AD rounds up the designers’ picks, which could help turn the bedroom into your new favorite place to be.

1. Stone Pale Warm from Little Greene

Stone Pale Warm (No. 34) from Little Greene.

“Personally, I prefer calm earth tones in bedrooms, which create a soft glowing effect. According to the teachings of feng shui, shades such as cream, beige, and light brown help to calm the mood and allow you to get a good night’s sleep. It is why I avoid garish colors in the bedroom. I particularly like to use Stone Pale Warm from Little Greene.”—Justin Howlett, interior designer at Euroboden

2. Côme from Ressource

Côme OROC 41 from Ressource.

“When creating a color scheme for a bedroom, we first ask clients the basic question of whether they prefer a lighter, more calming space, or if they want something more stimulating. For a bedroom with a little less drama, we like to choose the beautiful cloudy blue Côme from Ressource. We often pair it with Pale Stone or the bright yellow Aubusson Diaper, on the ceiling (both are also from Ressource).

We like Strong White 2001 from Farrow & Ball for the doors, and NCS S 1002 Y, a warm white from Caparol, for the baseboards and windows. Together, these colors create a calming atmosphere and a feeling as if you are being surrounded by clouds.”—Gisbert Pöppler, Gisbert Pöppler Architekten

3. Pontefract from Paint & Paper Library

Pontefract by Paint & Paper Library.

“We first discuss color preferences with the clients and then review options with them on-site. In the bedroom, in particular, it is important to look at the space, materials, and the light to determine which colors to use for bare walls, wallpaper, fabrics, and fixtures. We usually use bold and dark tones; they have a calming effect and provide a feeling of security. Some examples are Inchyra Blue, Hague Blue, and Pitch Blue, all from Farrow & Ball, and the eggplant tone Pontefract from Paint & Paper Library. More daring clients like to choose the colors of blackberries, eggplants, and red wine. To intensify the sense of security, we usually paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.”—Anna Gollwitzer, Dax I Architects

4. Ball Green from Farrow & Ball

Ball Green (No. 75) by Farrow & Ball.

“Bedrooms should not be too bright, but they also should not be too dark. It’s best to look out over the footboard onto greenery. Most people, of course, don’t have a view of nature from their bed with cabinets or a closet often in the way. Instead, opt for green tones in bedrooms like Ball Green from Farrow & Ball. You can perfectly combine dark wood tones with it and create your own secret garden, even if you live in the middle of the big city.”—Fabian Freytag, Fabian Freytag Studio

5. Terre Sienne Pâle from Les Couleurs Le Corbusier

Terre de Sienne Pâle by Les Couleurs Le Corbusier, produced under license by KABE Colours.

“My absolute favorite color is Terre de Sienne Pâle by Les Couleurs Le Corbusier. We painted our own bedroom this color—with a concrete ceiling, a gray bed, and white bedding.” As the designer noted previously, the perfect bedroom color, pink or otherwise, depends on the project. “For example, in our last apartment we covered the floor, walls, and ceiling with light oak panels. That created a great atmosphere, too.”—Ester Bruzkus, Ester Bruzkus Architekten

6. Bone China Blue from Little Greene

Bone China Blue by Little Greene.

“Blue is the perfect color for me in the bedroom—on all the walls and ceiling. What is more beautiful than waking up in the morning to a sea of blue? The perfect hue is the matte blue of the sky very early in the morning—a light blue mixed with a little gray and a touch of early morning mist—like Bone China Blue from Little Greene.”—Jan Hoyer, Hoyer & Kast Interiors

7. Hicks’ Blue from Little Greene

Hicks’ Blue by Little Greene.

“We don’t really have a favorite shade for the bedroom. In our experience, dark, rich, and calming colors tend to work, such as Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball and Hicks’ Blue by Little Greene.” —Sina Gwosdzik, Jäll & Tofta
