Understanding the different types of wooden doors

What is solid wood?

Contrary to popular belief, not all hardwoods are literally solid, although hardwoods are often more difficult than softwoods, although there are exceptions (such as balsa wood as a prime example). The term actually refers to the fact that wood is derived from a tree that produces seeds (angiosperms), because these trees will often produce seeds with a protective covering (fruit or veneer).

While it is commonly used in construction and furniture making, hardwoods have also been used as fuel, making tools and floors and even for building musical instruments. However, hardwood is more often used in construction than softwood due to its strong and durable nature.

The difference between hardwood and softwood

Both hardwood and softwood can be used in the furniture industry, but when it comes to doors, hardwoods are much more common and for good reason. Softwood is much less expensive, as softwoods such as rice and pine are used regularly in cheap furniture, especially in the United States, where such trees are widely spread. However, the quality is always always inferior because softwood is less durable, while hardwood, if well treated, may last a lifetime!

This does not mean that hardwood will not deform and appear damaged over time, but it remains better, holds its shape for a longer period and simply looks better. It can also be finished with a variety of oils, waxes and / or paints, so you will likely be able to achieve the specific look you’re looking for.

Oak

The most popular choice for an exterior hardwood door is solid oak, because it doesn’t look great with its natural rings perfectly suited for elegant staining, but it’s very safe and oak doors will provide an element of class and elegance in your home. Oak wood, as the name implies, is taken from the oak tree.

The difference between solid oak and engineering oak

Designed oak refers to a piece of furniture (in this case a door) constructed of cheaper material and then given an oak veneer (exterior veneer). This means that designer oak is often much cheaper, but still looks identical to the solid oak door outside.

Designed oak is created through the fabrication process by cutting thin strips of wood and then using a strong adhesive to affix them together.

There are many benefits to designer oak:

  • Since it is made from a series of cheaper woods, the manufactured engineering oak is much cheaper than the solid oak.
  • It retains its new look for a longer period of hardwood which meets the principle of sustainability

Benefits of solid oak

  • Durability, the oak exterior doors, if handled carefully, will last a lifetime
  • Buffer, the oak acts as a large natural insulator, which means it can effectively trap heat, making your home warm in the winter cool in the summer. It’s density also makes it very energy efficient.
  • The large density of oak means that it is great for noise reduction.

Pine doors

Possibly the most common types of softwood used to build doors are pine doors usually cheaper than oak and many people actually prefer the way they look. In fact, pine furniture is more desirable in many areas than oak, although less durable.

Differences between oak and pine

  • Pine is tender wood and oak is solid wood.
  • Pine is usually more expensive than oak.
  • Oak trees grow slowly, while pine trees grow much faster, which is one of the reasons why oak is more expensive.
  • Oak is commonly used in stronger furniture (doors, construction purposes), while pine is more commonly used for chairs, cupboards, tables, etc.).
  • Oak is heavier and darker in dye than pine.
  • Pine is lighter and more shock-resistant than oak.
