Call For Ideas: Tiny House 2026 Architecture Competition

Call for Ideas: Tiny House 2026 Architecture Competition
To celebrate a decade of shaping global architectural discourse, Volume Zero has launched its 31st international architecture competition: Tiny House 2026. Marking the platform’s 10th anniversary, this competition challenges designers worldwide to explore how architecture can cultivate thoughtful, efficient, and inspiring living environments within a minimal footprint. The objective is to celebrate individuality, rethink sustainability, and champion innovative, resourceful living.
A home connects with its users at a personal and emotional level, transcending its basic function as a physical shelter. Today, our domestic spaces are rapidly evolving. As we spend more time indoors, homes must adapt to diverse, complex needs. Contemporary homes are versatile entities, pulling double duty as offices, recreational zones, fitness areas, and sanctuaries for our pets. A home is no longer just a static structure you occupy; it lives with you.
The Opportunity
Rapid technological advancement and evolving human lifestyles demand a shift in residential architecture. Thinking outside the box is now crucial due to decreasing land availability, changing economic conditions, and the urgent need for climate responsibility. Designing space efficiently to anticipate future desires while driving the world toward sustainable living is an absolute necessity.
The growing desire for freedom has inspired a global shift toward simpler, more resource-efficient living. Paired with advancements in building materials, designers have a unique opportunity to create versatile personal spaces. Crafting a home that smoothly balances a workspace, a full-time kitchen, and an entertainment area within a single compact footprint is a challenging yet rewarding design endeavor. It is time to use creative innovation to shape an intimate, nurturing residential experience.
The Challenge
Participants are tasked with designing a Tiny House for two occupants that delivers a comfortable and high-quality living accommodation. The design concept should explore how compact footprints can support modern life in creative, meaningful, and sustainable ways. Proposals must balance the relationship between interior spaces and the exterior surroundings through a well-developed concept.
The total area of the proposed Tiny House must not exceed 300 square feet. The design may be stationary, mobile (towed by a vehicle), portable, modular, floating on water, or suspended mid-air. Proposals should prioritize comfort, flexibility, contextual sensitivity, and overall quality of living within a minimal footprint.
Design Program
At a minimum, the design proposal must incorporate the following spaces:
- Living space
- Sleeping area for two occupants
- Food preparation and cooking area
- Toilet and sanitation space
- Workspace
- Recreation zones
Participants are free to introduce additional functions aligned with their conceptual narrative, such as:
- Reading nooks
- Outdoor extensions or decks
- Pet-friendly design features
- Greenhouses or indoor gardening systems
- Flexible, transformable, or kinetic architectural elements
Client interaction is a critical component of the proposal. Participants can define their target clientele based on their design concept, whether it is an individual, a couple, roommates, or any specific demographic grouping.
Site Selection
Participants may select a site anywhere in the world. The location can be real or hypothetical, urban or rural, remote, natural, or densely built. The architectural response should address the chosen surroundings and demonstrate deep contextual sensitivity.
