AIA Los Angeles recognizes crème de la crème of residential architecture and architectural photography

The results are in for the 2022 Residential Architecture Awards and the Architectural Photography Awards, the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA) announced at a May 20 cocktail party held in West Hollywood. Twenty-eight exceptional residential projects received awards across eight categories and 18 photographs were recognized in three categories.

The winning residential projects were grouped by typology: Single Family (small, medium, large), Multi-Residential (small, medium, large), Adaptive Re-Use, Additions and Accessory Dwelling Units, Affordable Housing, Sustainable Housing, and Temporary Housing. Projects within each category were also distinguished by level of award—honor, merit, and citation—with honor being the highest distinction.

Central themes highlighted in this year’s awards include addressing issues such as the housing crisis and climate change. In addition to receiving a Merit Award in the Affordable Housing category, Koning Eizenberg Architecture also received the Climate Positive Award for Flor 401 Lofts.

“Flor 401 Loft exemplifies how climate-sensitive design is inseparable from a truly equitable housing solution,” commented the 2022 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards jury, a panel comprised of Flora Lee, associate partner, MAD Architects; Gisela Loehlein, Head of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and Stacy Williams, Bunche Center Librarian at the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies

The 2022 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards also spotlighted women- and minority-owned firms, including Design, Bitches and Shin Shin, the latter also being a part of a handful of newcomers to the awards.

The Architectural Photography Awards were grouped into three categories: Best Image, Best Rendering, and Best Instagram Feed. A total of 18 images by 15 photographers were recognized based on how successfully they were able to create new ways of seeing well-known work. The panel deciding the Honor, Merit, and Citation awards consisted of architectural photographer Ashok Sinha, Montalba Architects founding partner David Montalba, and Elizabeth Parker, chief creative officer at Shimahara Visual.

Below is the full list of winners of both the 2022 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards and the Architectural Photography Awards. All winning projects in the Residential Architecture Awards are located in the City of Los Angeles or L.A. County unless otherwise indicated. And while we’ve included photographs of the Honor Award winners from both awards programs in the below list, images of all this year’s AIA|LA-lauded residential projects and photographs can be viewed here and here.
