Yankees Legend Lou Gehrig’s Former New York Colonial Hits Market

If you’re a huge baseball fan, now’s your chance to own a bit of the sport’s history. The home of Lou Gehrig, one of the most beloved New York Yankee players, has just hit the market for $1.5 million. Situated in the historic Residence Park neighborhood of New Rochelle, the early twentieth century Colonial home has undergone a complete contemporary makeover, but still holds all the charm of the early 1900s.

According to the New York Times, Gehrig bought the house in 1927, right after winning the World Series title that year. At the time, the house needed a bit of renovation and Gehrig himself went about doing the repairs. He later moved both his parents in, and all three of them lived there until Gehrig got married. Sadly, his parents lost the house to foreclosure in 1937.

The two story single family home is just around 3,100 square feet, and sits on a quarter acre of lush, landscaped land. Two stone walkways lead up to a porch which spans the width of the house. Three sets of French doors open up to a small foyer that includes a sitting nook which faces windows to the backyard. Light parquet floors can be found throughout the first floor of the four bedroom, 3.5 bath home, with the exception of the kitchen where dark wood is used. The dark tone compliments the white finish of the cupboards, the dark countertops, and stainless steel appliances, all which culminate in a perfect modern farmhouse finish. The primary suite has a large fireplace and room enough for two large armchairs and an ottoman. Just like the kitchen, bathrooms have also been given the modern farmhouse treatment with white subway tiles and matte black fixtures. A stone patio and a perfectly manicured lawn complete the backyard.

The home has changed hands a few times since the Gehrig’s moved out and was last listed for $449,000 back in 2017. Glorianne Mattesi of Douglas Elliman holds the listing.
