Collaborating with Mercedes-Maybach

The legacy of Virgil Abloh will remain ingrained and remembered throughout the industries he touched upon, from fashion to politics. To reverberate his multidisciplinary mark, Mercedes–Maybach honors the late polymath artist, architect, creative director, fashion designer, and philanthropist with the launch of a limited-edition bespoke S-Class and capsule collection, inspired by Project MAYBACH.

The exclusive Maybach by Virgil Abloh, a fully equipped Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680, testifies to the decades of tradition of the car companies in defining the boundaries of luxury experience and the design ethos of Abloh. Glossy obsidian black coats the upper part of the vehicle while a sand hue cloaks its side flanks and special-forged rims. The interior displays a two-tone color scheme with the four-seat configuration, steering wheel, doors, lower dashboard, and ceiling lined in black and sand-colored Nappa leather.

Special logo inscribed

Mercedes-Maybach’s tribute to Abloh is underlined through the special logo inscribed on the piano-black middle of the center console, rear cushions, head restraints, and door-sill panel. The user interface of the limited-edition S-Class, a unique feature of the vehicle, presents the driver with a luxurious variation of the Maybach MBUX suite of technologies, adorning it with handpicked visual elements to enrich the digital content.

The colored border of the home button with the brand logo denotes the exclusivity of the edition, and fashion accessories decorate the profile pictures to signal Abloh’s touch. The result sees a vehicle that exudes a distinctive style from exterior to interior. As the brands put it, ‘every moment the driver spends on the road is elevated.’

Going hand in hand with the vehicle is the capsule collection which has been designed by Virgil Abloh together with OffWhite, in connection to the Project MAYBACH. It comprises sand-colored vintage washed cotton t-shirts and half-brushed cotton fleece crewnecks and hoodies, as well as canvas baseball caps and racing gloves crafted in canvas, neoprene, and suede, coated with a black spray effect and embroidered.

Limited to 150 units

Designed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener in 2021, the vehicle was finalized before Abloh’s untimely passing in November and is available in a strictly limited run of 150 units.

I am incredibly proud of the work we have created in collaboration with Virgil,’ says Wagener. From Project Gelaendewagen, which set the benchmark for fashion/automotive collaborations with our iconic G-Class, to Project MAYBACH which brought the distinguished Mercedes-Maybach heritage into the future, together with Virgil we truly broke new ground. The limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh exemplifies the symbiosis between innovative design and ultimate craftsmanship now available on the road.
