Tour the Maximalist and Eclectic Brooklyn Home of Three Best Friends

For the brief period of time when housing prices dropped in New York, one savvy art therapist and illustrator purchased a three-level unit nestled in a four-story 1901 house. Today, she shares the Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, apartment with her two best friends. “I fell in love with this place when I saw the bright bluish-green kitchen cabinets,” the young homeowner says. “I believe all rooms should be designed to be enjoyed at any time, and bring joy to the eye the minute one walks in. The large windows meant there would be great lighting for artwork and color, so we were able to go in a bright direction.”

The apartment’s location was perfect for hearing birds chirping in the mornings and afternoons. Plus, the owner’s cat, Joanie, loved the new home and laying on the windowsill in the warm sun in particular. “I chose to live in Boerum Hill because of the soothing atmosphere…” the homeowner says. “There was also a need to be close to Manhattan for work and for fun. Brooklyn is more open. I can grow vegetables on my deck, and I can get to know the artists living nearby.”

Playful and with a young-yet-mature vibe, the interior spaces were created by Ruchi Agrawal Mohan, founder of DesignbyRuchi, to honor the vibrant personality of the homeowner. From the Roman wallpaper in the entry, to the snake rug paired with hot pink and faux alligator dining chairs, many of the unexpected features are an ode to the various layers of the homeowner’s life.
