This Apartment in Madrid Packs a Punch in Just 970 Square Feet

In this apartment in Madrid’s Salamanca neighborhood, what was once a forgettable office has become, thanks to Estudio Rebuelta, a modern light-filled sanctuary. The detail-filled 970-square-foot apartment offers an appealingly fresh take on urban life for its owner.

“Our goals were to connect the various spaces in the apartment and also, on an aesthetic level, have the home reflect its owner,” the designers at Estudio Rebuelta say. “She is well-traveled and curious, and was open to our playing with colors, contrasts, and including some riskier items, such as the red table and the bookcase that connects the principal bedroom with the living room.” 

That red table is, in fact, the studio’s own design and it is one of many nods to the colorful yet graceful work of AD100 designer India Mahdavi, one of Estudio Rebuelta’s inspirations. Perhaps surprisingly, the other major inspiration was Belgian minimalism, reflected in the white that is a common theme of each of the rooms, helping to increase their luminosity. “In this way, we were able to play with decorative elements and art, and use those pieces to give pops of color to the project.”
