The John Derian Flat Opens at The Dewberry, a Significant French Design Collection Heads to Auction, and More News
Luxe and artful textiles have been synonymous with Scalamandré since its inception in 1929. Naturally, these fabrics are the star of Red From Scalamandré, the brand’s first foray into direct-to-consumer furniture. Maximalist prints from the 1940s through 1990s—galloping zebras, romantic blooming cabbage roses, and kitschy koi fish among them—were unearthed from the archives and reimagined to harmoniously cover the likes of wingback headboards, curved benches, rounded ottomans, and skirted slipcover dining chairs. These pieces are all rapidly brought to life by Cloth & Co. with an assist from the Chicago maker’s 3D rendering and digital printing capabilities.
Adi Goodrich rolls out inaugural furniture line
Long before Los Angeles spatial designer Adi Goodrich made a splash with her ephemeral large-scale sets and dreamy interiors (such as the surrealist-inspired lifestyle store Dreams in Atwater Village), she worked alongside her father, an architectural restorer, in his wood shop. Goodrich—cofounder of Sing-Sing Studio—delves into that past with The Frunchroom, her first range of Sing Thing furniture. Fashioned out of cherry wood and laminate, the cheerful objects are grounded in simplicity, spawned from pre-cut and hand-assembled 4-by-8-foot sheets that nod to Enzo Mari’s clever DIY approach to construction underscored in his 1974 manual, Autoprogettazione. The emotive collection includes lighting and furniture, as well as a tabletop vanity mirror and a sweet vase designed with Becki Chernoff of bX Ceramics and crafted specially for tulips.

Friends of the Schindler House calls for support
The West Hollywood abode completed by Austrian American architect Rudolph Schindler in 1922 was beautifully jarring. Lacking conventional rooms and blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors, it energized the notion of residential architecture, paving the way for countless contemporary California dwellings to come. Once a hub for carefree social gatherings, the Schindler House—today the headquarters of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, a satellite of the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna—is fast deteriorating and in danger of falling down.

Following the structural study it funded revealing the Schindler House’s grim state, Friends of the Schindler House, the non-profit organization that owns the property, has started the @100 Campaign to ensure that the residence is stabilized and restored to its original modernist glory for the next century and beyond. Reparations of the tar paper roof are slated to be finished by the end of the year, but just as pressing is the need to salvage the weathered wood damaged by insects and repair the concrete wall and floor slabs. One key step toward preservation efforts? A fundraiser at the Southern California Institute of Architecture on December 4 with napkin sketches from such industry talents as Thom Mayne, Billie Tsien, and Annie Chu up for grabs.
Industry recruiter Billy Clark and Clayton Apgar launch a podcast
In 2021, Billy Clark—founder of his namesake New York and Los Angeles creative management firm—and business partner Clayton Apgar (a former interior designer) published The Little Book to Land Your Dream Job, a breezy but resourceful dive into career development. That has now spun off into The Hire Life, a podcast wherein Clark and Apgar examine what work looks like in the 21st century by chatting with professionals across all industries about their personal journeys to success. Their first guest, Colin King—the tastemaking interiors stylist, product designer, and author of the forthcoming Arranging Things—shares how his background as a dancer organically opened up another realm of creativity.
