the fuji stool by terunobu fujimori reissued by three travelers
THE HISTORY BEHIND TERUNOBU FUJIMORI’S FUJI STOOL
back in 2012, japanese architect terunobu fujimori designed the storkhouse, a unique guesthouse in the village of raiding, austria. created in collaboration with roland hagenberg, the structure was built for both storks and artists under the motto of how to build a home for birds (and live in it.). the furniture, kitchen and door frames were all designed by fujimori, including the fuji stool.
the fuji stool, which was first crafted by local woodworkers using locally produced austrian oak, is now being reissued by three travelers at the nadoya art space as the first edition for japan.

ITS SCULPTURAL APPEARANCE LINKS IT TO NATURE
designed by terunobu fujimori, the fuji stool uses locally produced wood and is handmade by local woodworkers who sympathize with the concept. and while it is a daily piece of furniture, the stool excuses a sculptural appearance with finishes that link it to nature.
the first japanese edition of the fuji stool has been crafted by shigemi tanifuji, a furniture craftsman in odai-cho, taki-gun, mie prefecture. limited to 99 pieces, the chair has been built using local chestnut and zelkova wood.
‘the production of fuji stool requires the skill and knowledge of craftsmen who use hand tools such as knives, axes, saws and stools, and deep understanding and sympathy for design, making the best use of the wood of each land,’ said three travelers, the team in charge of the production. ‘the proportions born from that technique have an imperfect beauty that makes the best use of the nature and individuality of the wood, giving each one its own unique characteristics. and, like living things, it changes over time according to the environment.’
