The automotive industry is currently undergoing what may be its most profound shift. Due to governmental regulations, the transportation sector has been forced to address the massive contribution it makes to the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. 2023 will see the continuation of this process, with the introduction of dozens of electric vehicles (EVs) across price ranges, body styles, and manufacturers. We, as automotive enthusiasts, are here for that. EVs provide silent, thrust-y, and instant power. And because they don’t have traditional components like an engine, transmission, exhaust system, or gas tank dictating where things go, they also provide opportunities for liberation from conventional vehicle styling.

At the same time, the internal combustion engine (ICE) is having a renaissance. After over 150 years of continuous improvement, the ICE has become capable of incredible energy output and energy efficiency feats. And manufacturers are taking advantage of both, offering street-legal vehicles with horsepower figures that used to be reserved for Formula 1 race cars, and creating high-revving speedy sports cars with tiny motors previously better suited to lawn mowers. We feel guilty about our affection for burning fossil fuels, but we still occasionally relish the sound and the visceral quality of gasoline power.
