TEFAF Maastricht: 10 Standout Pieces From the European Fair

Before the flurry of art and design events comes to a halt for the slow season, there is TEFAF Maastricht to look forward to on June 25 through June 30, with an invitation-only day scheduled for today. Like the New York iteration held at the Park Avenue Armory in May, the flagship Netherlands event is unfolding in person for the first time since the pandemic began.

“TEFAF Maastricht is an annual feast for art lovers and collectors from around the world, uniquely bringing together 7,000 years of art history under one roof,” Hidde van Seggelen, chairman of TEFAF, tells AD PRO. “The art community is delighted to be back in Maastricht to experience the fair and the treasures our world-class exhibitors unveil.”

With 242 dealers representing 20 different countries, there is a lot to take in during this highly anticipated 35th edition. Here are 10 of the highlights from a massive slew of offerings spanning paintings, antiques, and classical antiquities, as well as a smattering of modern and contemporary pieces.

A “Japonisme” Patinated Table, presented by Adrian Alan

Propelled by the opening of trade with Japan and the debut of Empress Eugénie’s Chinese Museum at the Palace of Fontainebleau in 1863, Paris was agog over Asia in the 19th century. Capturing that affinity for the East is this majestic circa-1870 table. Melding Chinese enamel, gilt, and patinated bronze, the design is credited to Ferdinand Barbedienne’s Edouard Lièvre.
