teamLab unveils experiential art space in abu dhabi

Interdisciplinary Tokyo-based collective teamLab unveils teamLab Phenomena, a multi-sensory immersive art venue in Abu Dhabi. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism and Miral, the Emirate’s leading creator of destinations and experience, the project takes shape as a 17,000 sqm space that combines art and technology, sparking curiosity, imagination, and creativity in all who visit.

Expected to be completed in 2024, the project strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading cultural center, sitting alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and other major landmarks comprising the Saadiyat Cultural District. The newly unveiled venue, which is conceived as a ‘home to infinite curiosity’, exhibits a striking experiential design with installations that will be exclusive to Abu Dhabi and were developed through a rigorous experimental approach.

artworks produced by environmental phenomena

Visitors to the teamLab Phenomena are encouraged to expand their minds and set off on a trip through teamLab’s concept of environmental phenomena, which offers a fresh perspective on the world around us. Rather than existing independently, the artworks in teamLab Phenomena are produced by the environment that gives rise to the many phenomena. Objects like stones and other man-made materials maintain their structural stability on their own. Unlike these, the artworks depend on their surroundings to survive.

The specially created, one-of-a-kind building for teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is crucial in allowing the artworks to develop naturally and freely as if they were living things themselves. ‘At teamLab Phenomena, visitors will be immersed into a world that organically changes and evolves through the participation and actions of the people in it, and it is precisely this physical experience that can expand our senses of value.’ shares Toshiyuki Inoko, Founder of teamLab (see more here). ‘Our hope is for teamLab Phenomena to create opportunities for curiosity and imagination to be born.’

sitting at the intersection of art, technology, nature, and high-tech fantasy

According to HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi, the teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi sits right at the intersection of art, technology, nature, and high-tech fantasy, and it will provide a world of limitless wonder and creativity to all visitors. ‘Providing a journey which will trigger the senses, nurture curiosity, spark imagination, and awaken a thirst for knowledge, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi fully supports our commitment to inspire a new generation of innovators and creators in the emirate and beyond.’ he notes.

To celebrate the official launch of the project, DCT Abu Dhabi has also planned a preview activation for visitors to experience immersive artworks that represent the concept of ‘infinite curiosity’, bringing them on a voyage of wonder and sensory exploration. This must-attend event will take place at Mamsha Al Saadiyat from 24 June to 17 July.teamLab's new multi-sensory immersive art space in abu dhabi is 'home to infinite curiosity'
