feast your eyes on Sabina Speich’s crocheted art activism

From pizza slices to French fries, these food-inspired crochet delights not only look delicious but they also carry an important message. Created by Swiss artist Sabina Speich, the artworks are part of a long term project called Crochet Giantfood, in which Speich draws attention to issues of food waste, junk food, and the consumption patterns of a growing global population.

The colorful pieces are made mostly from secondhand wool and yarns, which the artist receives from followers on social media who would otherwise have thrown them away. ‘Tons of wool scraps are disposed of every year,’ says Speich. ‘Justice and environmental protection are very important to me, which I fight for.’

Works from Crochet Giantfood are currently on view at Helvetia Art Foyer in Basel, Switzerland, as part of a new group exhibition titled ‘Seeing full’. Open until June 30, 2022, the showcase explores how various Swiss artists deal with the topic of food consumption. Speich’s crocheted pieces include a giant fried egg complete with a rasher of bacon, a ham, cheese and salad sandwich, a partially eaten ice cream, and a cup of noodles.
