The Dongan Lake Sports Park by Atelier sq sits in the Chengdu World Universiade Park in Sichuan, China, where the opening ceremony for the 31st Chengdu FISU World University Games took place. The structure features three orange-toned corridors that spiral outward from the main stadium and gyms before converging at the center of the site, where a playground discreetly nestles.

 

‘During the FISU Games, the corridors focused on improving traffic efficiency. Today, its purpose focuses on enabling interaction with the public space and playground, increasing accessibility, enriching the landscape, and providing additional space for operation after the games,’ shares the studio.

According to Atelier sq, while walking across the tentacle-like corridors of the Dongan Lake Sports Park, visitors get to enjoy a rich visual experience thanks to viewing platforms of different heights.

 

The main structure is built using a 1,000 mm thick steel box girder, with hexagonal V-shaped columns spanning 20 to 30 meters. Meanwhile, the corridor skin comprises two 3mm thick steel plates tied together, with an orange coating that brightly contrasts the surrounding environment while highlighting the flow of movement. To make the volume look lighter, a white sheet reflects both the orange shade and green backdrop. Lighting is finally placed between two sheets along the corridors for a picturesque illumination at night.
