spacious unique rooms sprout from not a hotel’s verdant facade in japan
Not a Hotel Fukuoka
Not a Hotel introduces a new form of living in Fukuoka City, Japan, that embraces an intimate ambiance oscillating between a cozy home and a luxurious resort. Designed by axonometric and NKS2 architects, the project introduces eight spacious rooms, different in size and style, stacked on top of each other in a free-flowing arrangement, so as to form generous green spaces in between. Plants and trees are planted around the perimeter of the building, blurring the boundaries between in and out and providing a biophilic design. The building is currently under construction and its completion is scheduled for the summer of 2023.
The team at Not a Hotel sought to form a living space, ‘where you can escape from the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the extraordinary.’ Occupying more than 100 square meters, each room includes a different layout according to the needs and requirements of each user. These include the: Sound (4F), Bar(4F), Retreat (3F), Atelier (3F), Penthouse (5F / RF), Doma (1F), Desk (2F), and Chef (2F).

eight spacious rooms for all styles
Sound (4F) provides its residents with a theater experience thanks to an 85-inch monitor and superb sound. A minimal space with sufficient functionality in a compact design is a perfect place to spend time with someone with similar interests. In the living room, users can enjoy all kinds of entertainment such as cinema, music, and games in the best possible way. Moreover, it includes a well-lit dining room thanks to its high atrium windows and a convenient integrated kitchen. Also, there is a balcony filled with greenery, where one can enjoy tea time with an unobstructed view. As for the sleeping area, the entire wall is decorated with calm and luxurious wood, promising the best sleep time.
Bar (4F) is designed for wine lovers, as it accommodates its own wine bar, where one can enjoy a large collection of bottles. Moreover, the room hosts a bedroom open to the living room, ‘creating a more moody space by liberating it.’
An open-air balcony lets guests enjoy a drink and gaze at the stars, while there is also a spacious bathroom with generous openings overlooking the greenery and the blue sky behind. This room also houses a private sauna that heals the tiredness after a working day.
Retreat (3F) is the third room with a semi-open-air bathtub on the balcony, where you can refresh your mind and body. This jet bath is an interpretation of Japan’s ancient bathing culture in a modern design that combines functionality and fine aesthetics. The room also sees a spacious living room, designed for a relaxing and stress-free stay. A compact balcony creates another scene for tea time and brings in pops of green.
Atelier (3F) is provided for creative adults, who desire something between a workshop and a house.
Its main protagonist is a large table that can be used for work and remote meetings and adds flexibility to the space.
‘It is a desk where you can concentrate while taking in soft light from the large window, and a large table where you can spread out the materials and work.’ Atelier (3F) consists of a minimalist balcony that can double as an open-air workplace or reading space. ‘A special place where you can get fresh inspiration while feeling the air of the city.’ The bedroom is directly connected to the living room, and users can finish their day with a solo sauna.
for your four-legged friends
Doma (1F) seeks to eliminate the boundaries of the scene, connecting the inside and the outside. It is the only dog-friendly house that has an indoor area of 123 sqm, a private entrance, and a pet terrace. The outside is equipped with a gas fireplace, where one can enjoy a relaxing time while watching the flickering flames. A luxurious washroom takes shape directly next to the living-dining zone. On the terrace, there is plenty of space to bathe your pet and spend time together.
Penthouse (5F / RF) includes a fireplace and a luxurious rooftop terrace with an outdoor kitchen. Here one can enjoy the hot steam of the sauna and a cold plunge afterward with friends. The living room is open in all directions and acts as a hub that connects to all the locations of the Penthouse. ‘If you open the large window on the terrace, the feeling of openness will be doubled.’ An open bathroom directly connected to the living room, bedroom, and sauna is in direct visual connection with the greenery from the window. The private sauna can host up to five people, while on the luxury rooftop, you can enjoy BBQ overlooking the city of Fukuoka.
for the more extroverted and rowdy
Desk (2F) is designed to host people who easily like to switch moods. ‘It is a place that changes your mood the moment you think of it.’ The living room hosts a big table for 10 people, where you can spend time with friends, and family or even invite your co-workers. Depending on how you use it, you can change its scene and create a corresponding ambiance. The room has an open bathroom overlooking the lush greenery and a solo sauna for the end of the day.
The eighth room dubbed Chef(2F) features two dining tables to enjoy fine gastronomy with a good companion. ‘If you’re staying in Fukuoka for a long time, invite friends, or even a chef to a party at your destination.’ This apartment hosts a living room where dialogue is born spontaneously and a chef’s counter like an authentic restaurant. A second dining room spreads out on a terrace occupying about 30 sqm. The open kitchen makes cooking fun while you can enjoy the view of the terrace thanks to its wide windows.
