Nike EHQ Skate Landscape // F31

Text description provided by the architects.

F31 initial role was to define the conceptual direction for the environment around where work, sports, and leisure come together in a green and active campus landscape. It was also to define and design the skateboarding elements within the surrounding landscape. This direction went into the tender that went out to a select few architects to respond to.

The Nike skate landscape is freely accessible daily and an authentic and inclusive location specially designed to provide skateboarders with a stimulating creative canvas.

The diffused edge between skateable forms and the public realm identifies skateboarding as a borderless activity. This new kind of hybrid zone is inviting for all users and will be a progressive approach to public space, leaving a legacy for others to follow, centered around key objectives:• Authenticity• Legacy• Inclusive• Diffused• Hybrid• AccessibleWe have called it a skate landscape because of its combination between traditional architecture and skateboard architecture.

The skate landscape is intended as a public space that incorporates various skate-able elements. This makes it feel more like a skate spot rather than the traditional skatepark. All skate-able elements are based on topologies that have shaped skateboarding over the past decades, with the Aalto wave as its centerpiece. The area is characterized by its authentic and inviting appearance, designed to stimulate skateboarders’ creativity.

This new hybrid area is built to be inviting to all audiences and a forward-thinking approach to public spaces, which hopefully will lead to many more similar areas. For us the skate landscape is a continuation of exploration on how skateboarding can be intertwined into our cities and landscape architecture, it is in contrast to fenced or segregated skateparks, skate plazas, and the idea that skateboarding should be done in a specific enclosed space.
