Mindy Kaling’s Manhattan Loft Finds a Buyer

Writer, producer, and actor Mindy Kaling has found a buyer for the two-bedroom and two-bathroom Manhattan loft that she listed for $2.75 million last September, according to the New York Post. The contract price is not clear, but the Mindy Project creator and star paid $3.1 million for the sixth floor unit back in 2017 and will reportedly be taking a loss on the 1,166-square-foot property.

The loft is in a building designed by AD100 architect Richard Gluckman, nestled on the border of Soho and Nolita. Kaling hired One Kings Lane to design the homey white-walled space. The television mogul took inspiration from her father, architect Avu Chokalingam when decorating, opting for a more toned-down approach than her typical colorful-maximalist sensibility.“At one point in my life I loved wallpaper and gilded things, but now, as a 37-year-old, I’m gravitating more toward my dad’s style,” Kaling told One Kings Lane in 2017. Describing the space as “Moroccan midcentury,” the Sex Lives of College Girls creator used textiles to incorporate color.

Boasting views of the Williamsburg bridge and packing plenty of closet storage into its small footprint, the dwelling offers a well-designed sanctuary from the New York City hustle and bustle. The primary ensuite bathroom has dual vanities, a black marble soaking tub, and a separate glass-walled shower. In the kitchen, a waterfall-edge marble island provides eat-in seating that flows into an open-plan living space with wall-to-wall windows.

Kaling went in an opposite design direction with the Los Angeles home that she still maintains, returning to her more colorful aesthetic. That property, which was designed by Kate Ridder, features swaths of bright blue, yellow, and coral. “It’s a little Wes Anderson,” the screenwriter told AD during a 2017 tour. “It’s how layered it looks—he’s very conscious and he’s very generous with the colors in his palette.” Kaling also maintains a Malibu beach house once owned by Frank Sinatra.
