a viewfinder within the postcard dunes
the tiny studio by matt williams architects (see more here) is situated among the so-called dolphin sands of east coast tasmania. soon to become a guesthouse, the space gazes across great oyster bay to overlook the freycinet peninsula. this architecture is designed to be at once compact, relaxing, and self-contained — a place to retreat among the remote solitude of the coastal sands away from the bustle of everyday life.
designed to suggest a viewfinder, the form of the dolphin sands studio draws influence from vintage slide viewers. the design inspiration certainly makes sense, as the project is surrounded by a unique, postcard landscape with sweeping views all around. the design team acknowledges the challenge which accompanies such a site, as the architecture must not only take advantage of the natural beauty of its context, but it must simultaneously minimizes the disturbance of the site and its native vegetation.
the raw minimalism by matt williams architects
the small footprint of matt williams’ dolphin sands studio ensures both a sustainable existence and comfort within a tiny space. the project certainly makes the most of its compact design, and even integrates an outdoor shower on the deck to complement the indoor bathroom. the interiors emphasize this simple lifestyle with a material palette of oriented strand board. the exposed OSB create an atmosphere of raw minimalism with rich textures that effortlessly blend into the natural backdrop.
