marc newson’s task chair for knoll swivels in a single-line silhouette
meet the new Task Chair by marc newson
Four years after the launch of the Newson aluminum chair for Knoll, the Australian industrial designer introduces his first Task chair for the German brand. The new piece of furniture is characterized by its single-line silhouette with a cantilevered shape which makes the seat appear to float. ‘In the lifetime of any designer, you’ll struggle to find a project that’s more complex than a task chair — on many levels,’ said Marc Newson.
The Newson Task Chair features an organic design packed with sophisticated hidden technology. A brand new tilt innovation is cleverly hidden under the seat, flipping the mechanism vertically to adjust to the user’s preference. Tailored to fit a wide variety of bodies, the new chair ‘supports your ambitions with quiet confidence and empowers you to take on anything.’
combining simplicity, precision, and comfort
For Knoll’s latest seating creation, the designer sought to synthesize simplicity, comfort, and high aesthetics. The resulting design sees a meticulously crafted statement piece that simultaneously blends into its surroundings. Its monochromatic tone ‘gives a sense of wholeness to the chair and creates visual continuity.’ The customers can choose between four hues — light blue, black, brown, and pink — depending on their sense of style.
‘As Newson sees it, a task chair is a physical expression of a matrix of ideas on subjects as varied as material production, ergonomics, beauty, and social norms. Despite the intense effort required to reconcile all of these issues into a single form, the final result must appear effortless.’

providing effortless comfort
Marc Newson’s aim was to create a piece that offers effortless comfort and pleases the eye. Every surface, element, and seam carries his own design identity that combines simplicity and fineness. The soft, rounded shape of the back perforated by a circle pattern pulls the eye to the chair, offering an invitation to take a seat. Meanwhile, refined textures have been carefully selected to give every surface a sense of luxury.
