laundromat meets japanese ice cream shop in suppose design office’s hybrid concept
LAUNDRY HOLIDAY / YOSHIO ICE CREAM BY SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE
Suppose Design Office has renovated a laundromat run in an old warehouse in Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, into ‘Laundry Holiday / Yoshio Ice Cream’. Derived from the owner’s idea of making the routine act of doing laundry a daily pleasure, the 83.40 sqm hybrid concept sees part of the building converted into an ice cream shop. The Japanese architecture studio has conceived the project like a verandah in the city, which people can use as a resting place and a place for socializing and having fun while waiting for their laundry.

A HYBRID CONCEPT COMBINING LAUNDROMAT AND ICE CREAM IN JAPAN
Instead of changing the old way of doing things, the hybrid project introduces a novel laundromat concept that had never existed before in the area. With the addition of the ice cream shop, the owner wanted to make doing laundry a daily pleasure rather than a routine act. Keeping in line with the old warehouse’s corrugated metal exterior, Suppose Design Office has clad the Laundry Holiday’s facade in transparent corrugated sheets that create a visual connection between the interior and the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, the Yoshio Ice Cream shop features a deep green tile exterior that spills over the interior counter. Standard large tables are replaced with ping pong tables inside the laundromat for an additional touch of fun. Meanwhile, the terrace outside is furnished with concrete benches and planters where customers can enjoy their locally sourced ice cream.
