lander recycles discarded ocean fishing nets into quirky perforated skateboards

From discarded ocean fishing nets to recycled nylon skateboards, Lander introduces a uniquely fun and sustainable way to skate. The brand’s durable skate decks are shaped from a proprietary blend of ocean recycled plastic nylon with glass fibre reinforcement, and have been injection molded for a stiff standing platform and a high performance ride.

With an unique design that stands out from the crowd, the decks are marked by a distinctive hole pattern and completed with bottom ribs, providing long lasting strength that prevents the deck from sagging between the trucks imbues solid stability and exceptional speed. ‘In addition to increased traction and acceleration, our unique hole pattern allows the board to flex torsionally… lending itself to quick cuts and effortless carving,’ notes Lander.

from ocean waste to a new icon for skating culture

In 2015, Ryan Anderson, co-founder of skateboard manufacturing brand Lander, welded together a skateboard from scraps of perforated steel, introducing a ‘difficult to make yet fun to ride’ urban icon that made waves among the community. Expanding on its hype and potential, the team at Lander decided to enhance the original prototype for an easily produceable model, with a unique ride and form which could withstand the physical stress exerted by riders of all sizes and abilities.

After extensive research and development, and several iterations of molding, the team devised a design that recycled old commercial fishing nets, and made use of long-strand glass-fibre for enhanced performance via the zero-waste process of injection-molding. Retaining the unique visuals of the original design, the board is punctuated by a series of holes marking a diagonal flex pattern.

The two new models — the Rio and the Rodeo — are now available online and in-stores, co-designed in collaboration with former pro skaters. The duo is a robust solution for various riding needs and surpasses the shortcomings of other injection-molded skateboards on the market — namely: lack of sustainability, sag and poor-ride performance, unsafe traction and sub-par quality of components.
