Kingway Brewery Renovation // URBANUS都市实践
Text description provided by the architects.
Following Oct Loft (2005, 2007) and Nantou Old Town (2017), Kingway Brewery (2022) becomes URBANUS’ third urban regeneration project in Shenzhen that is honored to be the main venue of the Bi-City Biennale of UrbanismArchitecture (UABB). Kingway Brewery is located in Luohu District, the earliest city center in Shenzhen. With Shenzhen’s industrial upgrade and development from a “manufacturing city” to an “intelligent city”, the 11,600 m2 industrial heritage of Kingway Brewery has become an important witness to the city’s production and development.
URBANUS proposes “making on-site”, preserves the brewery’s architectural aesthetics and characteristics of that age, and thus make it a reflection of the zeitgeist. Our major strategies include integrating the scattered plants into a volume to achieve a balance with the new urban environment; preserving the concrete structures and intervening in the selective spaces to create diverse and flexible activity spaces, by which changing the former plants of single production into a diverse cultural site for the future.
Through spatial narratives, we have the global Creative Cities Network implanted and linked with local resources. Through architectural design and curatorial practice, Kingway Brewery can become a city installation to integrate public cultural life, a stage for cultural production, as well as a pioneering institution and an experimental field that provide creators with various possibilities.
