katsuhiro miyamoto renovates japanese orchard outhouse using seismic reinforcements
from orchard shed to multifunctional ‘komame commons’
‘Komame Commons’ is a renovation project carried out by Katsuhiro Miyamoto & Associates in Nagano, Japan. It takes advantage of innovative seismic reinforcements to update and transform an apple orchard outhouse into a multifunctional facility hosting a private school, a center for elderly care, and a Co-op station.

a striking scenery of old and new
Built by the client’s father-in-law, the ‘Komame Commons’ clearly illustrates a marriage of old and new. The architects intentionally preserved the existing building skeleton as a ‘trace’ of the family’s memories inside the house. New elements, like the red seismic reinforcements, were then added across the entire structure, creating a striking scenery of red strokes against a muted backdrop.
Local contractors laid out the reinforced concrete, steel frame, and roofing underlay, while the client worked alongside architecture students to complete the indoor furniture. The team is also currently planning the design of the surrounding landscape.
