Packaging remodeling
Ye – commonly known as Kanye West – has teamed up with Naoto Fukasawa, Muji’s industrial designer, to remodel McDonald’s fast-food packaging through the team’s collective vision. As seen in the image below, the noir effect that seems to infiltrate the rapper’s aesthetic. Instead of the McDonald’s burger, the print on the box resembles crammed sandwich in a tight space with its ingredients – lettuce, tomatoes, and slices of meat – still intact amidst the box size. The realistic-looking burger container is one of the few upcoming remodelings of the fast-food chain’s packaging under the helm of Ye and Fukasawa with the fries box coming next.

Futuristic?
As Ye writes in his Instagram post: ‘Ye teams up with industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa to reimagine McDonald’s packaging.’ The reception from the public, as one can see in the comment section of his post, seems to collect positive winks with some expressing their excitement about the possibility of also having a Ye-inspired meal at McDonald’s (a Yeezy meal, as one points out), the comeback of Ye as he deleted or archived all his Instagram posts for this one, and how the packaging looks ‘futuristic’ or already ‘classic.’

The last time Designboom spoke with the designer, professor, and curator Naoto Fukasawa, he told us that his sharp eyes could identify the process behind the objects and designs he lands his gaze upon, from their materials to their shape transitions, drawn from working in the design field for a long time. As a product designer, Fukusawa is no stranger to designing for brands and companies, but one may wonder for his reason for picking up the collaboration with Ye and McDonald’s. While no posts have come out from his and his team’s end on the collaboration yet, the public may just as well look at the new packaging while waiting.
