jung hoon lee blends traditional korean motifs into modern wood and steel furniture series
‘heritage gwol’ by jung hoon lee
Jung Hoon Lee (more here) presents ‘Heritage Gwol’, a new furniture series comprised of a coffee table and stols that blend classic Korean architecture characteristics with modern furniture. A continuation of his previous ‘Gwol’ series (more here and here), the sleek pieces are designed using contrasting materials, including stainless steel, walnut wood, and granite.
A Korean pattern carved on granite stands out in every piece. As its name reveals, ‘Heritage Gwol’ seeks to give a fresh look to traditional Korean motifs, emanating a divergence with mechanical manufacturing techniques and long-established craftsmanship.

juxtaposition of materials and craft
In the ‘Heritage Gwol’ series, Jung hoon Lee combines form and texture with an industrial cylindrical steel tube, similar to a pipe, that is sealed with manually carved granite. These typical sculptures stand out more characteristically as they contrast with the mechanical and contemporary forms of the entire furniture.
The designer has developed the coffee tables with a thin circular steel table top that is seamlessly placed on the horizontal pipe. The juxtaposition of materials with modern and mechanic forms adds to the set’s modern appearance, recreating statement pieces in traditional Korean houses that have existed for a long time.
