hymn wong’s black & white GIFs invite you to look at life from both sides
hymn wong launches ‘both sides thinking’
‘Both Sides Thinking’ is a project of over 300+ illustrations and dozen animated GIFs that blend philosophy with minimal design to visualize abstract concepts and ideas through plain black and white visual representations. Created by designer Hymn Wong, the pictographs literally inspire people to look at life ‘from both sides’.
reconciling the divide through yin and yang philosophy
‘Both Sides Thinking’ responds to social media exacerbating the divide between people with strong opinions. ‘There’s this constant battling between who’s right and who’s not,’ shares Wong (see more here). To represent that divide, the designer used the classic ‘black and white’ approach. But while these two color ‘extremes’ may seem to be opposing each other, they actually work like Yin and Yang; both sides need each other to form an image, a full story.

Some of the visuals are made into card games. One is called ‘The Relation Game’ where users get to explore and discover relationships that they might not be aware of yet. The second game, ‘Q42’, tackles a variety of life topics. Other products include the ‘Now Clock’, inviting us to return to the present moment, and ‘Nowhere’ lenticular cards that change meaning depending on how users rotate them: ‘Either you are Now Here or you are No Where‘, expains Wong.
