How to Create a Glam Room in a Small Space

In case you missed it, the glam room is clearly having a moment. You’ve probably seen a slew of celeb spaces that take the idea of the glam room to the next level, with walk-in closets and vanities that take up the space of a normal New York City studio apartment. (Props to Demi Lovato for setting the bar even higher.) Even if you don’t have an entire room to devote to your collection of makeup, clothes, and shoes, you can still create a glam moment on a smaller scale by setting aside a little office space or even a corner nook of your bedroom as a sacred space for getting ready. We consulted five experts on the process; here are their best tips to get you there without breaking a sweat.

Lighting is everything

Most glam rooms make a dramatic impact, and lighting has everything to do with that. “In a glam room, sexy overhead lighting is key,” says Tiffany Howell, the visionary designer behind the glam room of Elaine Welteroth and many others. “I typically use very artful sconces with bright lighting to flank the vanity mirror.” Additionally, you can use lighting in an unexpected way to enhance vanities or closets, making the space appear cleaner and larger: “I love custom lighting in a closet,” says interior designer Chandos Dodson Epley. “Mood is everything. Light the clothes boxes, the line of the ceiling and add decorative fixtures anywhere that is suitable.”

Pick a theme, any theme

Have fun and get thematic. It’s okay to choose one aesthetic and dive deep into exploring it. “Getting your glam done should be a totally fabulous experience, so the space should also be reflective of that,” says Kat Bell, cofounder of Argyle Design. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with a bold and dramatic theme. Using playful colors and introducing diverse textures will help a smaller space have that wow factor.”

The “selfie moment”

Think about photo ops and indulge in lots and lots of mirrors, which serve multiple purposes in a glam room. “When creating a glam space, it’s so important to think about what ‘the selfie moment’ will be! A statement mirror, great lighting, and a beautiful backdrop will usually do the trick,” explains Kat. “Also, mirrors help make spaces feel larger, so if you are working within a small space it definitely becomes multipurpose!”

Embrace the vanity

The vanity is the true statement of all glam rooms and a core, functional piece in a small space. Depending on what vibe you want, source something secondhand or vintage for a unique look. “A sculptural vanity table also helps to elevate the room,” explains Tiffany. “Every glam room needs an oversized mirror, a table with ample surface area, and cabinetry with plenty of drawers. The vanity chair is an opportunity for more of a wow moment. I’d go for a statement while keeping it ergonomic for long glam sessions.”

Display your favorite pieces

If you have a statement perfume bottle, a favorite bag, or expressive clothes that you love, consider leaning into them as actual pieces of decor to set the scene for your glam room. Not only will it make your space feel more unique and so much more personal, but it’s the easiest way to start creating a glam room with limited space, especially since you already have the items in hand. “I had to start small before I could convert half of a guest bedroom into a closet,” says the content creator Caroline Vazanna. “Having things on display like clothing is a great way to make your room look visually glam and interesting without having to invest in cool furniture.” Similarly, “If you love shoes and bags, highlight them,” adds Chandos. “If you are all about evening dresses or suits, display those first.”
