HKS interprets the joshua tree desert right into a mid-century trendy autocamp
a mid-century modern camping experience
with its newly completed autocamp, HKS and narrative design studio capture the serenity and openness of the joshua tree desert in a contextually inspired interpretation of a midcentury modern clubhouse retreat. the desert site is defined by its tranquil courtyards, passive design, roaming paths, fire pits, and a plunge pool.
joshua tree sets the perfect scene for this 55-key boutique resort. the simplicity of its small-space design highlights the beauty of the natural desert landscape around it. the architecture nods to the eclectic nature of the town it resides, supplemented with a mid-century modern elegance. the intentional use of raw and native materials provides texture and rustication, bringing a sense of nostalgia for the true camping experience.

translating joshua tree desert into modern interiors
designed by HKS (see more here) and narrative design studio (see more here), the 25-acre joshua tree autocamp is anchored by an arched, quonset hut-inspired clubhouse. the interiors of this structure are curated with locally inspired hospitality and modern details. elements of passive design in this project include orienting the building to shelter from winter winds and taking advantage of summer breezes, expressing shading elements on all facades, maximizing interior daylighting, and using simple and elegant architectural forms.
HKS worked on multiple studies to identify the best orientation for the property and factor in joshua tree’s intense climate. by shifting the axis of the property HKS was able to provide a seamless indoor/outdoor experience that shades visitors from the desert sun and wind while allowing views towards the vistas and beauty of joshua tree.
HKS creates community with minimal environmental impact
in the design of its autocamp joshua tree, HKS aimed to incorporate a feeling of both privacy and community on the property. intimate moments and privacy is encouraged at the airstream campsites but guests can also opt for shared spaces including firepits, a plunge pool, and participate in interactive programming put on by autocamp including fireside chats, movie nights under the stars, yoga, and sound healing sessions outdoors.
in keeping with the natural spirit of this place, autocamp joshua tree was designed for minimal impact on the environment, incorporating low water use, native plantings, xeriscaping to minimize irrigation, on-site water treatment, a heavy reliance on solar power, and dark sky-compliant lighting to preserve the clear view of stars. respect for the desert is of the utmost importance to myriad desert locals, who have grappled with development and a meteoric rise in tourism, particularly amid the recent protection for the area’s beloved joshua trees.
