The details: Named after cofounder Kyle Hoff’s great-grandfather, grandfather, and father, who were all steelworkers, Floyd was launched in 2013 as a response to the world’s disposable furniture problem. The Detroit-based brand began with the Floyd Leg, a powder-coated steel piece that allows you to build a 16″-high table with any flat surface, and has expanded its offerings to include the hyper-popular Bed Frame, sofas, storage, and more. Durability and sustainability continue to be at the forefront of Floyd’s designs—they’ve even committed to becoming carbon neutral.

Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?

Floyd’s The Sectional is a modern, modular sectional with endless possibilities. Its least expensive pre-configured option features two seats (so it’s more of a loveseat than a sectional) and costs between $2,120 and $3,920, depending on which fabric you choose. The priciest version includes five seats (including a chaise) and ranges from $5,305 to $9,275 (once again, depending on the fabric). You can also customize a configuration, which will be priced accordingly. Payment plans are available through Affirm.

What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?

As I mentioned, the configuration customizations are limitless. When it comes to fabrics, you can choose from five muted colors of Floyd’s classic Performance Fabric (which are the most cost-effective), two neutral hues of nubby recycled cotton bouclé, seven rich, felt-like Tonus fabrics, and five jewel-toned, woven Sisu fabrics. The Tonus and Sisu options are a collaboration with the Danish textile brand Kvadrat and are the most expensive.

I opted for a four-seat sectional with a right-side chaise in the Pebble bouclé, which costs $5,285 when it’s not on sale (though Floyd frequently runs promotions).

What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?

Depending on the configuration and fabric you choose, the estimated delivery lead time is between 3 and 15 weeks.

What kind of couch or seating arrangement did you have before, and what drew you to your new couch?

I moved into a new apartment right before ordering The Sectional, so I didn’t have any seating arrangements in the space. My last apartment was built in the 1960s, so I went for the three-seat Article Timber Sofa in Olio Green, which has a bit of midcentury flare. It’s extremely comfortable—pillowy, but not too slouchy—and I loved it. I paired it with a set of two black leather armchairs.

In contrast, my new apartment was updated in the past five years and features contemporary finishes, so I wanted a more modern design than The Article sofa. The living area is more compact, which meant I couldn’t easily fit a three-seater and a set of armchairs. I knew an L-shaped sectional would maximize seating in the space, without making it feel too small. With its sleek, boxy silhouette and variety of configuration options, The Sectional was an easy decision for my new home.
