Text description provided by the architects.
The predetermined urban planning guideline provides the potential of an exciting building structure in Vienna’s 22nd district. Three cuuubes make use of the given maximum height. Emphasizing the contrast between the different structures, the base consists of two stories throughout the entire site. Creating more tension as well as diverse view angles and different senses of space, the three cuuube’s arrangement is offset.
The two-story base is designed as an atrium house with a square atrium referencing the cuuube’s square floor plan – achieving a subtle formation of outdoor spaces as well as a fluent transition from public outdoor spaces to semi-private zones.
The square floor plan of the 11- and 7-story cuuubes is made accessible with one staircase and one elevator each.
The apartment’s layout avoids a north- or north-eastbound orientation.A staircase with natural lighting is just as important as it’s economy. A skylight, a light well throughout the entire building, light-flooded common spaces on the 2nd and 6th floor, as well as a generous glass façade in the entrée on the ground floor make for a friendly and bright staircase.
An access balcony connects the atrium house with the accompanying cuuube.
A singular living character on the base floors is achieved by the atrium as specific outdoor space and the low height of the building’s base.
Creating a simple, compact and clear structural layout, spatial structure is arranged around the central staircase. Each apartment consists of a clear floor plan as well as a loggia and balcony.
A bathroom with natural light and access to the loggia can be found in some apartments as a unique feature. Mixing in with the plain structure of loggias, framed balconies are spread freely across the entire façade. The structure of the balconies and the distinct frame of loggias behind it create an ensemble with both a suspenseful depth effect and a playful development of shadows throughout the day.
Consequently emphasizing various layers of the simple and efficient building geometry.A generous common room can be found on the ground floor facing Berresgasse. Creating an axis from the street to the inside of the building, the common room makes use of the structure’s entire depth. Another common space is a laundry room on the 1st floor, equipped with a grand glass façade facing the buildings arcade.
Expanding common zones, the arcade is executed as a continuation of the balcony structure. Frames of different sizes provide seating areas as well as zones of lingering and communication..
