Model tested: Petrie Sofa by Crate & Barrel
The details: If you’ve ever purchased a piece of furniture–or flatware or linens or a throw pillow or really anything that belongs in a home–you know Crate & Barrel. You might not know, however, that they were founded in 1962 in Chicago and that there are currently over 100 retail shops.

Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?

The smallest configuration of the Petrie (65”) starts at $1,699. The largest (100”) starts at $2,269. Crate & Barrel offers financing through their branded credit card.

What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?

The Petrie is one of the decor grand dame’s best selling sofas. Given that this model is a staple of the brand, they’ve had time to perfect and expand their customizations. There are four widths, 11 leg types, and 186 upholstery options.

You can order up to five free swatches–I got five shades of blue to find just the right choice–and ended up going with the Brennan fabric in sapphire for my 76 inch sofa.

What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?

Ready-to-ship models are available within a few weeks. Custom options will take closer to five months.

What kind of couch/seating arrangement did you have before and what drew you to your new couch?

We had a very similar arrangement–even down to the color of the sofa. The Petrie was in a style I knew would work for the room and it’s from a reputable brand–it turned out to  be a reliable, great looking, and well made piece of furniture. It lives in the TV room so we wanted something attractive, comfortable, and, given that its primary user is my dad, who isn’t known for his decorating style, he wanted something neutral and functional.

Delivery + assembly

What was the delivery process like?

We went with the threshold delivery. This means Crate & Barrel will bring the sofa into the lowest level of your home but won’t lug it up the stairs and place it for you wherever your heart desires. White glove delivery is available for $249, which is definitely worth it if you don’t have the ability to lift this substantial piece, as is store pickup, which is free.

What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?

Thankfully, there was no assembly involved aside from putting the legs on and taking it out of the box. But it did take two people to bring it into the space.

After installation

What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?

76″ w, 36″ d, 32″ h. It fits perfectly into what I would call our medium-sized TV room. Because it’s so customizable, I think there’s an option for most homes.

Sit Test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?
