the annual RENDER OF THE YEAR award returns with its 2021 winners in five categories: overall awards, young designer awards, undergraduate awards, interior awards, and exterior awards. organized by arch out loud, the competition rounds up, yet again, fascinating renderings of alternative worlds, cities, interiors, and architectures.
overall winner: ‘church in nomine patris’ by tom burkewitz
exploring dream-like, dystopian, and nostalgic worlds
the RENDER OF THE YEAR 2021 ‘overall winner’ award goes to architectural illustrator tom burkewitz. titled ‘church in nomine patris’, the rendering reveals an austere church with dark gray facades, sitting in the middle of a grassy field and reaching for an overcast sky. this dream-like and eerie atmosphere is felt across other winning visuals. among them is an astronaut finding new land in a dystopian era.
beside these dark undertones, nostalgic and emotionally charged renderings also reign in other categories — like a warmly-lit studio space populated by an array of memorabilia.

to create such profoundly ambient visuals, arch out loud states that ‘designers must discern the ways people interpret their images. they must work with the feelings that emerge from an image. they must understand how to speak to their audience without words’.
