For 2,000 Designers, the Future of Architectural Visualization Lies in Real-Time Rendering and AI

Architizer, in partnership with Chaos, recently conducted a survey of more than 2,000 design professionals to understand the present landscape and envision the future of architectural visualization. The in-depth study revealed compelling trends within the ArchViz industry and architectural profession more broadly, with designers harnessing the power of real-time rendering tools and gearing up for an “AI revolution”.

Real-time rendering expert Roderick Bates presented the findings in a recent webinar on the Future of Architectural Visualization, which can be viewed below. “It’s not very often that you get to share what people are thinking in our industry on this scale,” said Roderick, highlighting the incredible range of respondents that contributed their insights to the report. They hailed from every kind of design firm from small to large, and specialized in a variety of disciplines, from architecture and interiors to engineering and product design.

Each respondent answered questions on their personal use of architectural visualization tools, such as real-time rendering and VR, and gave their opinions on the future adoption of emerging technology such as artificial intelligence. Some of the questions included:

  • What forms of architectural visualization does your firm utilize?
  • At what stages of the design process do you utilize visualizations?
  • What would you say are the main advantages / challenges with real-time rendering?
  • How is your firm handling the emergence of AI in relation to architectural visualization?

The biggest takeaway from this seminal report is arguably the growing prevalence of real-time rendering technology in all facets of architectural practice. The survey responses reveal that real-time software is now an essential tool in the armory of architects, with a large number of design professionals now relying on the technology to drive their creative process forward on a daily basis.

“As software has grown more sophisticated and improved hardware has become available, the segue of architects’ workflows into a near-instant feedback loop between design and visualization is a natural and welcome transition,” stated report contributor Ross Brady.

Perhaps the most significant finding from the survey, though, was the rapidly evolving perception and growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) within the realm of architectural design. “AI seems to have placed the design professions in the middle of a new technological revolution before they even knew it began,” states the report. It remains to be seen what impact artificial intelligence has on the architectural visualization industry, but one thing appears certain: This fledgling technology is not a fad.

Paul Keskeys, Architizer’s Editor in Chief, remarked: “This global study reveals fascinating insights into the state of architectural visualization today — and offers a tantalizing glimpse of where it’s heading tomorrow. The findings indicate that the prevalence of real-time rendering and the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence look set to transform the industry in fundamental ways in the coming years.”

Stay tuned to Architizer as we report more on AI in architecture in the coming months, and explore Chaos’ powerful suite of architectural software for real-time rendering solutions and beyond.
