Anouska Hempel Is Selling Her Glorious English Country Manor House

Any and everything designer Anouska Hempel touches is imbued with her theatrical flair for the romantic and sense of wanderlust, near and far. She became a household name amongst design aficionados when her groundbreaking hotel, Blakes, opened, in London, in 1973. A few years later, she followed up with her namesake hotel, The Hempel, another tribute to her specific storytelling and layers of modern chic and luxury.

With her intriguing and unique mix of ideas and styles, Anouska Hempel, a.k.a. Lady Weinberg, continues nonstop with design projects around the globe, both residential and commercial. With Lady Weinberg at the helm, it will come as no surprise that her own country property, Shaw, is nothing short of a fairy-tale house, with grounds full of walled gardens, stone doorways, and an outdoor dining area called “The Cathedral.”

Currently on the market with an asking price of 4 million British pounds ($5 million), this early 18th-century classical manor house is a historically-listed building from 1711, designated as Grade II, which signifies a particularly important building. The two-story structure, which has nine bedrooms, six bathrooms, and six fireplaces, is surrounded by approximately six acres of landscaped gardens and grounds. Located near the charming town of Melksham, in Wiltshire, with rail service to London and a 30-minute drive to Bristol International Airport, this country house has served as the retreat for Lady Weinberg and her tribe of friends and family for about six years.

Lady Weinberg describes the property, which has been on the market for the past few months, as “a happy place.” She adds: “We always traveled back and forth from London every weekend and with six children, there were always lots of kids, usually in and out of the trees!” Everything, inside and out, is this talented designer’s work, and when the property was purchased, there was plenty to do. She underscores, “I did everything in this house. All the decorating, as I always do, over and over again.”

When asked why the move and where to next, Lady Weinberg states, “I don’t stay static. I am always looking for the next place, the next job.” She speaks of this house with great fondness and when asked what her favorite time of the year is, in this manor, she quickly answers, “I love all the seasons here. This is a house for all seasons.”

Although Lady Weinberg remains a bit vague about what might come next, her present is full of projects in luxury residential, high-end commercial, landscape, and product design—and not to be overlooked, yachts!
