Alki Lookout: SHED Reworks a 1910 Seattle Cottage Around Puget Sound Views

Alki Lookout is a 2,706-square-foot house above Alki Beach in West Seattle, reworked by SHED Architecture & Design around a simple question: how can an existing house make better use of an exceptional site without turning into a conventional coastal interior?

The cottage dates to 1910 and had already undergone two remodels. SHED’s intervention reorganizes the house around clearer circulation, integrated storage and the broad views toward Puget Sound, Bainbridge Island and the Olympic Mountains.

Moving everyday life toward the view

One of the most consequential changes is also one of the simplest. The kitchen and dining functions were reversed, placing a built-in dining booth beside the windows. Rather than adding floor area, the renovation changes where the family spends time and makes the existing outlook part of everyday use.

Built-in elements continue through the house. Window benches conceal storage, while the primary suite uses an integrated bed platform with drawers. A clerestory window and mirrored transom help carry daylight deeper into the suite.

Color as an organizing device

The material palette deliberately avoids literal beach-house references. Pink Concrete Collaborative surfaces, Zia Tile, pale timber and patterned finishes establish a more graphic interior language. Individual bathrooms receive distinct material treatments while remaining part of the same overall renovation.

The exterior extends that approach into the neighborhood. Seattle artist Stevie Shao painted a mural incorporating whales, ospreys, cranes and an axolotl requested by the owners’ daughter. The mural turns the facade into a visible part of the project rather than leaving the expressive work entirely inside.
