spy reveals his dream-like and kinetic ‘eclypses’ installation

Public and urban artist SpY introduces ‘Eclypses’, his latest site-specific, kinetic sculpture conceived for an unused industrial space at the Weapons Factory of La Vega in Oviedo, Spain. Built on the occasion of LINK Fest 2022, the installation is composed of twenty large discs moving in a slow choreography, incorporating light patterns and an accompanying soundscape. Visitors can navigate around and across a living artwork, actively engaging in a unique, multidimensional experience of hypnotic and immersive qualities, marked by the piece’s scale within the warehouse’s imposing space.

entering a contemplative and sculptural dimension

Known for appropriating urban elements through transformation or replication and his overall unique commentary on urban reality, the Spanish artist — who dominated the streets of Madrid since the mid-eighties — explains that his latest work is embued with more meditative layers. ‘‘Eclypses’ presents a more sculptural and contemplative dimension, in which elements such as the changing daylight and an emphasized presence of the architectural setting come into play.’

The kinetic sculpture was part of LINK Fest 2022, ‘Circuit of Unusual Cultural Experiences,’ which ran from August 26 – 28, 2022. Visitors were welcomed into an immersive black and red scenography set against an industrial backdrop. Walking across the installation, they witnessed each circle flowing up and down, moving almost poetically to a dream-like soundscape composed by Hector Sandoval.
